Matty and Kylee King are celebrating one year as the proud owners of Mitchell Cycles.

On the 1st of October 2025 they officially took over ownership, continuing the tradition of a staff member buying the business from the previous owner. They are the sixth owner/operators since Dave Mitchell founded the store in 1953.
Thirty years ago Matty joined the cycling industry straight out of school at Cycle Inn and little did he know that he would later be the owner of another iconic New Plymouth bike shop.
The first year has been an intense learning curve for the New Plymouth couple and incredibly busy. They have had the shop repainted, signage redone then purchased and sign-written a shop van.
Matty and Kylee consider themselves fortunate to have kept the staff, Glen, Mat and Callum on the team this past year, as it would have been a lot more difficult without them. All the team are keen cyclists, and Kylee had to succumb as well when Matty bought her a bike one Christmas.
Each member of the staff brings their own experience within the bike industry and across a broad range of disciplines and events, both past and present.

Previous owner, Blair Cox, is a regular shop visitor, sharing his comprehensive bike fit knowledge and cycling industry wisdom with the team.
It was Blair’s vision that Matty and Kylee would be a good fit as the next owners of Mitchell Cycles. They are both incredibly grateful to Blair and his wife Robyn, for the opportunity and the everyday experiences of being at the helm of a store in a pretty cool well-supported local industry.
Matty and Kylee enjoy their work, because every day they get to help people get the most out of their cycling. There’s nothing like the freedom of a bike.
